An AI citation is a link or source reference that an AI search tool shows alongside its answer, pointing to a page presented as supporting its answer. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot all show sources in this way. For a small business, being cited means your page is offered to someone as evidence while they are still making up their mind. That can bring visits and trust, but nobody can guarantee it, and the work that improves your chances is mostly the same work that makes a good website.
Citations, mentions and links are not the same thing
It helps to separate three ideas that often get blurred together.
- A citation is a clickable source shown with the answer, usually as a numbered reference, a link card or a list of sources. Perplexity, for example, describes its answers as including "numbered citations linking to the original sources" (Perplexity Help Center, checked 2026-10-19).
- A mention is when the AI names your business in the text of the answer. A mention may or may not come with a link to your site.
- A traditional search result is the familiar blue link further down the page. A page can rank in the normal results, be cited in the AI answer, both, or neither.
In practice, a business can be mentioned without being cited (the AI took the name from a directory or a news article), or cited without being mentioned by name (the AI used your explanation of a process but linked to your page as a source).
How AI search tools find the pages they cite
Most AI search tools don't answer from memory alone. They run searches in the background, retrieve relevant web information and then write a summary, linking to the pages they used. Google calls part of this process "query fan-out": the system issues several related searches to build one response (Google Search Central: AI features and your website, checked 2026-10-19).
What that means for each of the main tools:
| Tool | Where its sources come from | What a site owner controls |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's own index. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet (Google) | Crawl access and indexing eligibility; snippet controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet; Settings > Search generative AI in Search Console to opt out of these features |
| ChatGPT search | OpenAI's search crawling and, for some searches, partner search providers. OpenAI says blocking OAI-SearchBot excludes a site from ChatGPT search answers, though navigational links can still appear (OpenAI crawlers; ChatGPT search, checked 2026-10-19) | robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot (training is a separate bot, GPTBot) |
| Perplexity | Pages crawled by PerplexityBot, plus pages fetched live when a user asks a question (Perplexity crawlers, checked 2026-10-19) | robots.txt rules for PerplexityBot; Perplexity says its user-requested Perplexity-User fetches generally ignore robots.txt |
| Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries | Bing-backed web search and grounding systems (Microsoft Bing, checked 2026-10-19) | Crawl access and indexing signals; Bing Webmaster Tools |
Making your pages accessible helps AI search tools discover and retrieve them. The exact requirements differ: Google requires indexing and snippet eligibility, while other tools can also use partner search results or user-requested page fetches. You can manage access and eligibility, but you cannot guarantee indexing or citations.
Why AI citations matter for a small business
There are three practical reasons to care.
- They appear at the point of decision. People ask AI tools questions like "how much does a commercial aircon service cost in Singapore" or "what should I check before hiring a bookkeeper". A cited page is offered as the place to read more, at the moment someone is comparing options.
- They borrow trust from the answer. A source link says, in effect, "this is where the information came from". If your page explains something clearly and accurately, that's a good position to be in.
- They can send visitors who are further along. Google says that clicks from search results pages with AI Overviews are "higher quality", meaning people are more likely to spend more time on the site (Google). That's Google's own observation across many sites, not a promise for yours.
There's a fair counterpoint. When an AI answer is good enough, some people won't click any link at all. Being cited doesn't guarantee a visit, and a business shouldn't rebuild its marketing around AI answers alone. It's one channel among several, alongside traditional search, your Google Business Profile, social media and referrals.
What you don't need to do
A lot of advice in this area sells tricks. Google's guidance is unusually direct about what isn't needed for its AI features:
- "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." (Google)
- "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search." (Google Search Central: optimizing for generative AI features, last updated 2026-07-10, checked 2026-10-19)
- "There's no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI to better understand it." (same guide)
- Structured data "isn't required for generative AI search, and there's no special schema.org markup you need to add". It's still useful for rich results (same guide).
The same guide treats optimising for AI search as SEO, and warns that no third-party tool has access to Google's internal ranking or AI systems. Treat anyone promising guaranteed AI citations with caution, and that includes agencies.
Other tools publish less detail than Google. Where they do give guidance, it points the same way. Microsoft's Bing team suggests clear headings, tables and FAQ sections, claims backed by examples and sources, and keeping content current (Bing Webmaster Blog).
What improves your chances of being cited
None of these steps guarantees a citation. They make your pages easier to find, easier to understand and more worth quoting.
Make sure the right bots can reach your site. Check that your robots.txt file doesn't block Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot by accident. Some website security plugins and hosting firewalls block unfamiliar bots by default.
Check indexing for your important pages. In Google Search Console, check that your service pages, location pages and key guides are indexed. Our guide to setting up Google Search Console walks through this. Bing Webmaster Tools helps you check Bing indexing, which supports Bing-backed AI answers.
Answer the question early. If a page exists to answer "how long does a kitchen renovation take", say so in the first paragraph, then explain. AI tools pull passages, and a passage that answers the question directly is easier to use.
Write sections that make sense on their own. A section headed "How much does it cost?" should contain the answer, the factors that change it and any caveats, without relying on the paragraph above. This also helps people who skim.
Back up facts. Link to official sources for rules, regulations and statistics. Use your own numbers only when they're real and you can stand behind them.
Say something only you can say. Google's guide asks for original, first-hand, "non-commodity" content. A page that restates what a hundred others say gives an AI tool no reason to pick yours. Your actual process, your real price ranges, the questions customers ask you and the local details you know are harder to copy.
Keep business details consistent and current. Your name, address, phone number, opening hours and services should match across your website, your Google Business Profile and directories such as Bing Places. AI answers that mention businesses often draw on these listings.
How to see whether you're being cited
You can't see every citation, but you can see more than you could a year ago.
- Google Search Console: Dedicated Generative AI performance reports show impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, with a separate report for generative AI features in Discover. Google launched them in June 2026 and says they reached all websites worldwide on 31 August. As checked on 19 October 2026, the reports show impressions rather than clicks; sites with too few impressions may not see a report (Google launch announcement; Search report help; Discover report help).
- Bing Webmaster Tools: The AI Performance report (public preview from February 2026) shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and some partner integrations, and a sample of the "grounding queries" associated with citations (Bing Webmaster Blog).
- Manual checks: For ChatGPT and Perplexity there's no equivalent site-owner report that we're aware of. You can ask them the questions your customers ask and note which sources appear. Answers vary by person, location, wording and time, so treat this as a spot check, not a measurement.
These reports provide different measures of visibility, rather than a complete record of every citation by every AI tool.
What's in your control, and what isn't
In your control: your site's crawl-access settings, whether your pages meet indexing requirements, how clearly and accurately you answer questions, whether your facts are sourced, and whether your business details are consistent.
Not in your control: whether search engines actually index your pages, whether an AI feature appears for a given search, which sources it picks, how it words the answer, whether people click, and how each tool changes over time. Google says plainly that indexing and serving "isn't guaranteed" (Google).
A sensible goal isn't "get cited by AI". It's "have the clearest, most trustworthy answer to the questions our customers ask, on pages search engines can reach". Citations, where they come, are a result of that.
