Short answer: Google decides which local businesses to show using three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. A service business improves its Google Business Profile by using its real business name, setting an accurate service area, choosing the right category, completing every section, adding real photos, collecting reviews steadily and keeping details consistent everywhere.

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that appears in Google Search and Google Maps when someone looks up your business or a service near them. For most Singapore service businesses, it is the first thing a new customer sees, often before your website.

How does Google decide which local businesses to show?

Google's local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how close you are to the searcher or the area they searched. Prominence is how well known and trusted your business is. Google also states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

You can't change distance, so the tips below deal with relevance and prominence.

1. Use your real business name, with no keywords added

Your profile name should match the name customers see on your website, invoices and signage. "Tan's Cleaning Services" is correct. "Tan's Cleaning Services | Best Home Cleaning Singapore" breaks Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended.

If you want to rank for "home cleaning", put it in your services and description, not your name.

2. Hide your address if customers don't visit you

Most cleaners, movers, aircon technicians and contractors go to the customer. Google treats these as service-area businesses and says they should hide their business address and list a service area instead. This matters even more if you run the business from home, because a visible home address is public.

Set your service area to the parts of Singapore you actually cover. Listing the whole island when you only serve the east looks inaccurate and helps no one.

3. Choose the most specific primary category

Your primary category tells Google what you are. Pick the most specific one that fits, such as "House cleaning service" or "Moving company", rather than a broad one like "Service establishment". Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer.

4. Fill in every section

Google recommends making your business information as complete as possible so it can match you to relevant searches. Check each of these:

  • Services, each listed separately in the plain words customers search for
  • A description of two or three sentences on what you do and where
  • Opening hours, with special hours set for Singapore public holidays
  • The phone number you actually answer, and your website
  • A booking or enquiry link, if you take bookings online

5. Add real photos of your work

Photos of your team, vehicles and finished jobs show customers you are a real, active business. Use your own photos, not stock images. Add a few new ones every month rather than 50 at once.

Take care with customer privacy. Avoid showing house numbers, faces or personal items without permission.

6. Build a steady flow of reviews, and reply to them

Reviews are part of prominence. Google says that more reviews and positive ratings can help a business's local ranking. The way to get them within Google's rules is to ask every customer after every job, with a direct review link, and never offer anything in return.

Reply to every review, positive or negative. Replies show customers that someone is paying attention.

7. Keep your details consistent everywhere

Your business name, phone number and service area should match across your website, Facebook, Carousell, directories and invoices. Inconsistent details confuse customers and make it harder for Google to trust your information.

Avoid frequent changes to your business name or address. If you rebrand, update the name everywhere at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Google Business Profile free? Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile costs nothing.

Can I appear on Google Maps without a shop? Yes. Service-area businesses can appear in local results by hiding their address and setting a service area.

How long until changes make a difference? Google says edits can take up to 3 days to appear, and rankings for new businesses can take up to a month. Improvements in visibility usually build over weeks as reviews and activity accumulate. No one can guarantee a ranking position.

Do I need to post updates? Posts are optional. They keep your profile looking active and let you share offers or news, but accurate details and reviews matter more.

How do I get my business on Google Maps in Singapore? Create a Google Business Profile, then verify it. Google usually asks for verification by video, phone or email before the profile goes live. If customers don't visit you, hide your address and set a service area. Your business can then appear in Google Maps results for the areas you cover.

Why is my competitor ranked above me on Google Maps? Usually it comes down to distance from the searcher, a more complete profile, or more and newer reviews. You can't change distance, but you can fill in every section of your profile and collect reviews steadily from every job.
